Subscribers to the HughesNet satellite internet service are subject to a "Fair Access Policy", which sets a maximum threshold of downloads (in megabytes) permitted in any 24 hour period. Your FAP threshold depends on the level of service you are subscribed. If you exceed the FAP threshold, your internet service slows down to a crawl, a very frustrating situation. You can read more on the HughesNet site.
I wrote this little tool to help my family manage our downloads and help avoid getting "FAP-ed". Basically it starts with the HughesNet usage reports and makes them better! including
No. Husage is independent of HughesNet and not supported nor endorsed by HughesNet.
This service is provided free of charge (because we're nice)
No, we do not (and cannot) directly access your HughesNet account. We read publicly available usage reports from http://customercare.myhughesnet.com and reformat them to make them more useful.
No. We read publicly available usage reports from http://customercare.myhughesnet.com and reformat them. Those reports are 1 to 2 hours behind. I don't know why, that's just the way it is.
No. hnFAPmon is different and Husage does not replace it. hnFAPmon is a piece of open-source software you install in your HughesNet modem to monitor internet downloads. Its data is more up-to-date than Husage, but also has some drawbacks: it requires technical skills to install, it adds unauthorized code into your modem, and it generates its own data.
On the other hand, Husage is very easy to use, you can run reports away from your network, and it uses HughesNet's own reports. Husage also has other features like email notifications. Husage can be used together with, or instead of, hnFAPmon depending on your ability and needs.
First, if you're getting unnecessary email notices every hour, it might be because your Warning threshold is too low. Go into Preferences and adjust your Warning and Alert thresholds to values that are reasonable for your HughesNet subscription plan and FAP level.
You can disable all email notifications by un-checking the "Send email notifications" check box in the Preferences page.
Or, if you don't want to use Husage anymore, you can "un-sign-up" by deleting the Husage report for your Site ID, clicking the "Delete this report" in the Preferences page.
